Exploring the D Overtone Flute Scale
The overtone flute is a unique instrument that relies entirely on the natural laws of physics. Unlike standard flutes with finger holes, the pitch is controlled solely by blowing pressure and by opening or closing the end of the tube.
This virtual keyboard is a tool for composers and students to visualize the available notes on a D-tuned overtone flute without fonger holes (such as the pitkähuilu or koncovka).
- White Keys (Open): These represent notes played with the end of the tube open. They correspond to the even harmonics (2,4,6…).
- Dark Keys (Closed): These represent notes played with the end of the tube closed. This changes the acoustic properties of the pipe, producing the odd harmonics (3,5,7…).
Use this piano to experiment with melodies and to hear the unique ”natural” intervals that define the archaic sound of the overtone flute. If you want to use also half-closed tones, you can virtual D-overtone flute form this link.
